PhD Psychologists by Subfield: 1975, 1985, 1995


In the last twenty years, the number of PhD psychologists has grown more than 180% (from 28,389 to 80,713). Although the numbers in all fields have increased, the health service provider subfields (clinical/counseling/school) have seen the greatest increases numerically and proportionately. Psychologists with degrees in the health service provider fields have jumped over 300% from 10,027 in 1975 to 40,835 individuals in 1995. Psychologists in research fields also have charted increases from 18,362 to 41,318, which represents more than a 125% increase.
