Formal Definition of Slippage
- Assign each member of the faculty a percentile score that is determined
by that faculty’s current salary, and its place in the distribution
of salaries for faculty with the same rank and seniority.
- Use the annual merit rating to define a faculty member’s “target salary”
- Assume that (for a given department) faculty with an average merit
rating should earn at least the 50th percentile on the national distribution.
Faculty with a merit rating one standard deviation above the average
should be at least at the 75th percentile
- And so on….
